A 100% online, non-GRE graduate program does not require GRE test scores for admission or enrollment. It is a growing trend in higher education.

The GRE has been around since 1936 when the Carnegie Foundation initially used it to test undergraduates’ aptitude and learning at Columbia, Princeton, Yale, and Harvard. As a result, it has existed for more than eight decades and is considered a benchmark for determining graduate student preparedness.

Quick audio summary:

Non-GRE Colleges fact 5

While the original GRE test scores were used to assess how much graduates had learned from their bachelor’s program, they eventually became part of the admission requirements for most graduate schools. The Carnegie Foundation maintained using the original GRE on an experimental level and gradually expanded.

The good news is it is now possible for prospective graduate students to obtain the highest degree in their field without the GRE. There is a growing number of non-GRE graduate programs emerging every year.

What is the GRE? Who needs to take it?

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) was developed and facilitated by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), an independent, non-profit organization, in 1948. The GRE was developed to assess knowledge in literacy and mathematics that would indicate that a student has enough learning and reasoning capabilities to thrive in graduate school.

Non-GRE Colleges fact 3

The GRE has been adopted by numerous business and graduate schools as part of their standard admission and fellowship requirements.

Several graduate programs require scores from the GRE General Test as a requirement for admission, while some programs need scores from one or more GRE Subject Exams. While your GRE score is an integral part of your admission to graduate schools, it isn’t solely the requirement.

High GRE scores are ideal, but in many graduate and business schools, the GRE is mainly for formality. By standard, your preferred college’s or university’s admissions committee will take into consideration how you perform in interviews, your letters of recommendation, the reputation of your undergraduate program or school, personal statement, professional and research experience, publications, and other non-GRE-related factors.

In some cases, GRE Subject Test scores are needed for your graduate program admission. Any of these can easily supplement a below-average GRE test score.

Why do some schools NOT require the GRE?

In recent years, there has been a decline in the GRE’s dominance, similar to other standardized exams. As a concrete example, several liberal arts colleges and Ivy League schools have eliminated the SAT requirements for undergraduate enrollment. That said, some colleges and universities have started eliminating the GRE requirement.

Non-GRE Colleges fact 4

Since the GRE score has a validity period of five years only, many schools have waived the GRE requirement and focused on the bigger factors, such as a prospective graduate student’s well-established professional or research experience. They understand that a graduate student’s efforts and success cannot be possibly measured by a single exam regardless of how challenging and comprehensive it is.

Many colleges argue that GRE test scores are NOT indicators of graduate student success. Passing the computerized test in three to four hours is easier than meeting all the requirements and demands of a graduate program.

Do prospective employers mind if I didn’t take a GRE test?

Generally, employers do not require applicants to have taken the GRE for most positions. However, some positions in highly competitive fields such as academia, research, and consulting may require the GRE as part of their application process. It is best to check with the specific employer to find out their requirements.
